Home release and merchandise
Kick-Ass was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on 3 August 2010 in North America, selling 1.4 million units within its first week, one-third of these in Blu-Ray format, Kick-Ass debuted at number one on the DVD sales chart. The discs were released in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2010.

The video game was produced by WHA Entertainment and Frozen Codebase. It was released through the App Store on 15 April 2010 for iPhone and iPod Touch. The initial Apple platform releases were reportedly unfinished beta versions and were withdrawn from circulation pending a relaunch of a finished version. The game was released on PlayStation Network on 29 April 2010. Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl and Big Daddy are playable characters. The game features Facebook missions and integration. Both versions of the game received poor reviews.

Horizontal Integration

One of their producers the UK based Marv Films, just signed a three-year first-look deal with Sony through its International Motion Picture Production initiative.  The Sony deal puts Marv in the formidable company of UK producers such as Working Title (partnered with Universal), DNA (Fox), Harbour (Buena Vista), Material (New Line) and Aardman (also with Sony).

Their other producer Plan B Entertainment was founded by Brad Pitt, Brad Grey, and Jennifer Aniston. In 2006, Pitt became the sole owner; the company currently holds a release deal with Paramount Pictures, along with Warner Bros, and 20th Century Fox. Due to my previous research into the distributors of Kick-Ass, it show that horizontal integration is apparent with Paramount and Universal.

Universal Studios

Founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, it is one of the oldest American movie studios still in continuous production. On May 11, 2004, the controlling stake in the company was sold byVivendi Universal to General Electric, parent of NBC. The resulting media super-conglomerate was renamed NBC Universal, while Universal Studios Inc. remained the name of the production subsidiary. In addition to owning a sizable film library spanning the earliest decades of cinema to more contemporary works, it also owns a sizable collection of TV shows through its subsidiary NBC Universal Television Distribution. It also acquired rights to several prominent filmmakers' works originally released by other studios through its subsidiaries over the years.
Its production studios are at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive in Universal City, California. Distribution and other corporate offices are in New York City. Universal Pictures is the second-longest-lived Hollywood studio; Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures is the oldest by a month.
They helped to make disney the big success it is today, distributed some of the most iconic films in the Hollywood film industry; such as Frankenstein and Dracula.
However, by the late 1950'st the motion picture business was in trouble. The combination of the studio/theater-chain break-up and the rise of television saw the mass audience drift away, probably forever. The Music Corporation of America (better known as MCA), mainly a talent agency, had also become a powerful television producer, renting space at Republic Studios for its Revue Productions subsidiary. After a period of complete shutdown, a moribund Universal agreed to sell its 360-acre (1.5 km²) studio lot to MCA in 1958, for $11 million, renamed Revue Studios. Although MCA owned the studio lot, but not Universal Pictures, it was increasingly influential on Universal's product. The studio lot was upgraded and modernized, while MCA clients like Doris Day, Lana Turner, Cary Grant, and director Alfred Hitchcock were signed to Universal Pictures contracts. The long-awaited takeover of Universal Pictures by MCA, Inc. finally took place in mid-1962 as part of MCA -Decca Records merger (Universal's then parent company), with MCA as surviving corporation. Universal-International Pictures, the production subsidiary reverted in name back to Universal Pictures. As a last gesture before getting out of the talent agency business, virtually every MCA client was signed to a Universal contract. In 1964 MCA formed Universal City Studios, Inc. to take over the motion pictures and television arms of Universal Pictures Company and Revue Productions (officially renamed Universal Television in 1962). And so, with MCA in charge, for a few years in the 1960s Universal became what it had never been: a full-blown, first-class movie studio, with leading actors and directors under contract; offering slick, commercial films; and a studio tour subsidiary (launched in 1964). But it was too late, since the audience was no longer there, and by 1968, the film-production unit began to downsize. Television carried the load, as Universal dominated the American networks, particularly NBC (which later merged with Universal to form NBC Universal) where for several seasons it provided up to half of all prime time shows. An innovation of which Universal was especially proud was the creation in this period of the made-for-television movie.
Though Universal's film unit did produce occasional hits, among them AirportThe StingAmerican GraffitiEarthquake, and a blockbuster that restored the company's fortunes, Jaws, Universal in the 1970s was primarily a television studio. Weekly series production was the workhorse of the company. There would be other film hits like E.T. the Extra-TerrestrialBack to the Future, and Jurassic Park, but the film business was still hit-and-miss. In the early 1970s, Universal teamed up with Paramount Pictures to form Cinema International Corporation, which distributed films by Paramount and Universal worldwide. It was replaced by United International Pictures in 1981, when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer joined the fold. UIP began distributing films by start-up studio DreamWorks in 1997, and MGM subsequently dropped out of the venture in 2001, letting 20th Century Fox internationally distribute its films. In 1990, MCA created MCA/Universal Home Video Inc. to enter the lucrative videotape and later DVD sales industry.

    UK VS US

These two posters are for the same film 'St Trinians', however the top ones was used to advertise the film in the UK and the bottom was used to advertise the film in America

There are obvious differences between the two posters; for example the UK one has a traditional school background, as opposed to the americans yellow spotlight like background. The background for the UK production may of been used as the British audience can relate and recognise the school background and atmosphere, whereas the American audience would not. The American background makes the characters seem heroic  and superhero like, which will appeal to the American audience more so.

Within the UK poster all the characters are apparent and are pictured on a tilt to connote anarchy. Whereas only a few of the characters are pictured on the American poster. This may be because the majority of the American audience will only go to see a film if they see iconic, well-known actors/actresses. This may be the reason why Misha Barton's name is visible on the American, as   she was a hit american actress in the american program 90210.  Russell Brand is also pictured much clearer on the American version, as at the time the film was released he was becoming a well-known British actor in America. And therefore by them both being featured on the American poster will encourage audiences.

The typography used on both posters are completely opposing also. The British typography for the title is stamp-like, pink and connotes rebellion through its use of skull imagery etc... It also looks very British as it has the school cote of arms apparent with it also, which is something that is notoriously used in British schools. Whereas the American poster's typography is completely different, and plain but with the addition of a few swirls, which connotes that it is a teen film. However, the typography is red which connotes rebellion and badness, whereas the pink used in the British poster connotes teenage girls.

The slogans on the posters are too different the British one is 'School can be a riot', and the American is 'School for bad girls.' The British poster seems to be advertising the anarchic, rebellion of the characters against the school. Whereas the American poster seems to be sexualising the characters through their slogan, and larger pictures of the characters. They have also made Collin Firth look more masculine within his pose for the American poster, which again gives him sex appeal.
